Right, now that’s out the way. How are we??
I am exhausted and extremely grateful after this weekend.
I went from rehearsing with Laurence and the huge church organ in Stoke Newington (last tickets remaining) to playing a show at the Prince Albert in Brighton, to filming a music video in Suffolk.
It is a constant source of joy and fulfilment to know that music I make can inspire another piece of art; whether that’s a music video, an organ re-arrangement, or a drawing like this one by Chris Riddell.
To be a part an eco system of creativity is one of the best things about being an artist, truly an antidote to pressures of metrics and mata-data that dominate how we tend to perceive or rank success.
After the gig on Saturday night, I bought a pizza from a vending machine (mental) and boarded the rowdy train from Brighton to London. Crashing into my bed just after 1am, I dreamt of having a baby and leaving it casually in treacherous places, before being saved by the bell of my alarm at 430am. Shortly after, I peered down from my window at friends Sal and Toby, waving up at me with a flask of rocket fuel coffee and a van packed with camera and lighting gear. We drove to Suffolk and arrived as the sun rose, and spent the day filming a music video that I cannot WAIT to show you. Jess (producer) had arranged the beautiful locations: flat, endless fields with huge open skies. Her parents kindly let us invade their home to film and sold me jars of honey that they’d harvested from their bees. Generosity of spirit and dedication to their craft was incredible and I just feel so blessed to be working with such wonderful people.
I need a nap. But! No rest for the wicked. It’s time to crack on with all the PR, radio plugging, content scheduling etc for ‘Tell Me Something’. I’m independent and self- managed so the hustle never sleeps.
Speaking of, does anyone know a good manager they can put me in touch with???
Thank you for reading, thank you for listening and thank you for PRE SAVING! I am so very grateful to you.
Recommendations:
Album: Getting Killed by Geese (I have fallen for Cameron Winter’s froggy vocals and beguiling songwriting. Catharsis to be found in the band’s thrashing and screaming)
Book: How to Survive a Heatwave by Maggie O’Farrell (I was dogsitting/ songwriting last week and trudging through a dense old book before picking this up and flying through it. Another brilliant story, I wonder if I’ll ever read a book of hers that I don’t like. Twisting plot, the dazzling drama of ordinary families, in all its humour and tragedy)
Film: Bones and All dir. Luca Guadagnino (absolutely horrible. Just what I wanted. I’ve accepted that Timothee Chalamet is an extraordinary actor. Maybe if the two leading actors weren’t so brilliant, the story would be tacky and silly. But as it was, I loved the disgusting horror of this and it certainly has stuck with me all week since watching)
Okay that’s everything for now. Thank you for reading and presaving, hopefully see you at a show soon!
All my love,
EC xxx
