Song context:
I started writing this song in 2019 (centuries agO) while trying to process a very messy break up. It was one of those tricky endings full of love, where no one could be painted as the villain, but walking away is the only thing left to do.
I recorded a voice-note-demo on my phone of the first two verses and sent it to my friend Af. I liked sending things to Af. We met in a poetry module at uni and he wrote beautiful poems (still does) and would listen to those early songs (some made it to my first album Murmurations) and would be kind and sometimes brutally honest.
And then somehow I forgot about it. That is, until Af came to my gig and asked why I never played it live. So spooky! because all of a sudden I remembered the parts, the words, melodies and harmonies that I’d been building all those years ago.
Hohnen Ford, a truly wonderful singer/songwriter, asked to meet for a writing session and I brought her this half song to see what she’d make of it. Its pretty rare for me to connect with someone so easily in the writing room, but HF really understood the assignment and we wrote the bridge that informed the rest of the song:
I still have all this love to give
You didn’t use up half of it
Though we weren’t quite enough
I’ll make sure this wasn’t wasted love

We recorded it, as with the rest of the album, in the 3 day stint at George Ezra’s studio Hotel Quebec. Alex Crawford on guitar and me singing. One full take, playing live together.
G-Lo arranged all the strings that you’ll hear on the record, plus engineered, recorded and played cello, with Athena Walker on violin. When the two of them lock in together it is truly something to behold (as you may have seen at a live show!)
Lester was always dialled in remotely for these string sessions. We recorded strings at the Crypt in Crouch End.

My year started with a beautiful week wading deep into making my third album with producers Matt Cooke and Michael Hemmings. Its a new way of working for me - building up the musical language to best express this new chapter. Rather than aiming to capture how the songs sound live, we’ve been creating sound worlds for them to live in. There is a lot of room for experimentation and play.
I love making music. Thank you for listening.
And for reading this!!
No recommendations from me today. Except my new song!! I strongly recommend you go and listen to my new song.
I hope you enjoy :)
Lots of love,
